Coronavirus, Ozone Therapy

The ISS of Italy, ahead in research, authorizes the use of oxygen-ozone.

Ozone therapy can be used to treat people who have tested positive for Covid-19.

With a letter sent on March 24 to the Scientific Society of Oxygen Ozone Therapy (SIOOT), the Scientific Secretariat of the President of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) (Superior Institute of Health) authorizes the use of ozone therapy for the treatment of patients who have tested positive for Covid-19.

It is written in the letter that the proposal of the SIOOT protocol the for a possible use of Oxygen Ozone Therapy in the treatment of interstitial coronavirus pneumonia has been carefully evaluated by some ISS experts.

“The available data as effectively compared to the proposed indications – continues the letter – essentially consist in demonstrating the effectiveness of ozone in killing the SARS virus in monkey cells, and in the clinical experience of the benefit found in patients with bronchial pneumonia.”

After evaluating possible insights, the letter signed by dr. Luigi Bertinato, Head of the President’s Scientific Secretariat, confirms that the moment to use oxygen ozone is supported by expert clinical centers experienced in the treatment of viral pneumonia, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità considers it appropriate that the treatment itself can be carried out, after acquiring the patient’s informed consent, by physicians with specific experience and with the availability of appropriate equipment, as described in detail in the protocol “.

In the past, the Superior Health Council had also been involved in gathering information on the problems related to the use of oxygen-ozone therapy.

In a message  by the Minister of Health sent to the Regional and Provincial heads of Sanita, to the command of the Carabinieri of Rome and to the commission of Government in the Regions and the Provence, it was written that the Council Superior of Health in a meeting of July 23, 1992 had reviewed the national and international literature and studies in particular in more recent scientific works which appeared in the journals accessible through MedLine.

In the statement, it points out that it has been ascertained that there are anti-bacterial and anti-viral activity in treatment with oxygen ozone in regards for blood used for transfusion and other blood hemo products.

In the request for authorization for use of oxygen-ozone therapy, SIOOT stated that:

  • According to the results of an experiment conducted in the China’s national laboratory P3 headed by professor Li Zelin, that the ozone therapy was demonstrated as effective in killing the SARs virus that had been inoculated on the renal cells of the green monkey resulting in a virus death rate of 99.22%.
  • The virus discovered at Wuhan and the SARS virus both belong to the group of Coronavirus.  The researchers discovered that Covid-19 is 80% similar to the SARS virus, therefore, they assume that ozone may be equally effective in the prevention and control of the Coronavirus.
  • The physicians at SIOOT treated many SIOOT patients affected by bronchial pneumonia.  The results of the ozone therapy were excellent.  Duration of the illness was reduced in patients with prompt recovery from hypoxemia and improved radiological results. Moreover, the use of oxygen ozone proposed by SIOOT is not incompatible with other pharmacological therapies.

SIOOT communicated that from today there are at least 10 hospital centers which already use the oxygen ozone therapy in the treatment of positive patients of Covid-19.  The hospitals can be found in regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Lazio.

In this regard, SIOOT will communicate within 40 days to the Institute Superior of Health the first clinical results coming from the hospital centers that are using ozone therapy.
